When painting a portrait one should differentiate according to the framing of the subject: Headpiece, head-and-shoulders, half-length, knee-length, full-figure. According to the pose or direction of the person’s head the piece is called “en face” (from the front), “en pofil” (from the side), half profile or three-quarter profile. Portrait painting already existed in the ancient world, although only very few pieces have been preserved.
In this workshop, you will learn basic color theory, additional material teachings and how to capture expression, pose, clothing, composition and perhaps even mood of the sitter in your painting. You will be taught how to paint from a real model and get an insight into anatomical structures of the face. Before the oil painting starts, a drawing will be made to enhance the understanding and the proportions of the portrait. The sketch will then be transferred to your canvas after which you’ll start working with oil paint.
